Search Engine Optimisation tips
A search engine like Google has 2 main parts to it. Natural
results and Paid or 'sponsored' ads (these can sit at the top or on the
right).
Natural results:
There are no 'easy shortcuts' to get straight up the top of the
'natural' results. It's not normally a 'set and forget' approach either.
A website needs to have mention of keywords and key phrases (that the
client wants to be found by) that are sprinkled throughout the pages as
text.
These words and phrases need to be in page titles, text, urls and folder names.
Our CMS (Content Management Software or Website Editing System or login
area to your site) allows you to add these keywords and phrases into
all of these areas. You will see on this page, the page, titles, and
the url or web address has keywords in it.
Paid (Pay per click) or sponsored ads:
Any business (that has a website) can sign up for 'pay per click' or 'sponsored' ads through a site like google.
You can set a budget per click, per day and per month e.g. 50 cents per
click, max $100 per day. The search engine then takes your per click
bid and matches to with other competing companies and if you bid the
highest, it will run your ad at the top of these ads (right up the top
or on the right of a search result).
It will keep running your ads until your budget is reached, then it stops.
The best strategy is to:
- Have a quality destination (website) for people to come to, one that your proud of and want to promote.
- You need to be able to control the keywords throughout your site at
any time to keep your website relevent, (which our CMS allows you to
do). Clients can save a lot of money by doing this themselves as they
add new pages or text. Our CMS also does a lot of this for you by
putting keywords in urls (links) and page titles automatically.
Otherwise known as Search Engine Friendly urls or SEFs
- Start a pay per click marketing campaign in Google or Yahoo. (We can set these up and run these for clients who are too busy)
- Keep your website up to date, and make changes to it (in particular) the home page.
- Exchange links to and from your site with others in your industry.
Google really loves to see lots of links to your site from other
websites. As an extreme example a link from the front page of channel
7's website to your site, will increase your positioning in the search
engines.
