SSL Certificates vs Redirection

There are two ways that you can accept payments from your online customers:
  1. The customer leaves your website to make payment on a third party website that specialises in online payments and once payment is made, the customer returns to your website. eg: PayPal
  2. The customer stays on your site and enters their credit card details directly onto a page on your website.
If you are starting a new business and are trying to keep costs down, we recommend letting paypal manage your payments as opposed to accepting credit card payments directly on your website for a few reasons:
  1. Paypal is a well known and long established company for accepting payments on websites and has low fees.
  2. To accept credit card payments on your website you require a SSL Certificate to securely accept payments.
  3. SSL Certificates can start from around $100 per year and it will also incur a charge of roughly an hour for our Developers to install it for you.
  4. For a website to use a SSL Certificate it requires an unique Dedicated IP Address to verify itself on the internet. This means you will need to upgrade your hosting plan from our standard Corporate A to Corporate B which includes a Dedicated IP Address.
  5. Wait until your website is bringing in enough money to warrant the additional costs.

SSL Certificates

SSL is one of the most secure methods of transferring data across the internet. Things like credit card detail, payment details, emails, usernames, passwords and all other kinds of data can be protected by SSL, and one of the most surefire ways to protect your transmitted data is a verified SSL certificate.

Verified SSL means that the SSL certificate installed on your website or webserver has been independently verified by a trustworthy, accredited SSL verification company. Such companies include VeriSign, Thawte, RapidSSL and GeoTrust.

Who should I choose?

Your choice of SSL certification company depends on your needs as a business.
  • Verisign is the original SSL company and carries with it a sense of reputability and grandeur.
  • Thawte offers certificates that cover the wide ranging fields of web and code developers right through to the secure encryption of important website data.
  • RapidSSL prides itself on fast SSL certification delivery with highly affordable pricing.
  • GeoTrust is the company that provides a wide range of flexible SSL certificates with varying levels of encryption for the regular shopping cart websites.

How long does it take for an SSL certificate to be supplied to me?

It will take anywhere from 24 hours to 5 working days for an SSL company to create a valid SSL certificate for your website. The actual time required is determined by the amount and level of verification that your chosen certificate requires. The simplest and most basic certificate can be delivered quickly, whereas a more complex and more secure certificate may take longer to create, test and install.

What steps will be taken by the SSL Certification Company?

  1. Contact Us and let us know of your intentions. We will then supply your site with a dedicated IP address.
  2. Place your order with your chosen SSL Certifier.
  3. If the Certifier contacts you, confirm your company details.
  4. Upon verification of your company details, your SSL Certificate will then be securely emailed to you.
  5. Follow the instructions from your SSL certifier to install the certificate through your site's CPanel login.

How do I renew my SSL Certificate?

Prior to your certificate's expiry you will receive an email asking you to renew. Visit your SSL Certifier's website to renew your certificate, then resupply us with your renewed certificate.

What are Extended Validation SSL Certificates?

Extended Validation means that your SSL certificate will be more visible to the public when browsing the internet. For example, in addition to providing a secure, hidden SSL layer of protection to your site, it also provides a publicly visible layer which clearly verifies the owner of the site.

This public layer is compatible with the most secure web browsers, like IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera. Other browsers may imlement the secure hidden layer, but not the public verification layer. The public verification layer is indicated in Internet Explorer by turning the address bar green. In Firefox it is indicated by stating the company name in a green section of the address bar. This extra layer of visibility makes clients feel that dealing with your website is safe and secure.

You can view an example of Extended Validation on GeoTrust's website here. Take note of the colour of the address bar.
